Lose Weight with the Alkaline pH Diet

by admin on March 13, 2010

The alkaline pH diet, more often known as the acid alkaline diet or simply the alkaline diet, is a approach to eating according to which at least 65 percent of the foods you ingest are alkalizing.

Many people are fed up with diets, and not without reason. Numerous people have repeatedly tried to lose weight on risky and impractical fad diets. Before long, they always find these diets too inconvenient to follow, and all the weight that they lost quickly returns. As a result of these experiences, many people have given up on diets altogether.

Nowdays, most people think of a diet as a short-term approach to lose weight. At the same time, the word "diet" originally referred to a way of life. And that's the best spirit in which to think about the pH diet. It's not a faddish approach that you adopt for two weeks so that you can slim down for the beach. Instead, it's a practical approach to achieving and maintaining an optimal weight and good health for the rest of your life.

Understanding the Alkaline pH Diet and Weight Loss

With obesity reaching frightening proportions, many of us are clearly interested in how we can lose weight and then maintain a healthy weight for life. This second part is key, because as hard as it is to lose weight, keeping it off is even more challenging.

Every diet author seems to have a different theory about which foods make people fat, and which foods help us to lose weight. But the most important determinant of whether someone loses weight, gains weight, or stays the same is the difference between calories absorbed through food and calories burned through exercise and basic metabolic activity.

The two keys to permanent weight loss are regular exercise and a diet that is satisfying but fairly low in total calories. Please note that a crash diet that drastically restricts calories is not a healthy or effective way to lose weight. In actuality, such a diet can actually backfire by making you miserable and causing your body to go into starvation mode, holding onto extra body fat rather than burning it as you want.

Do All Alkalizing Foods Help You Lose Weight?

Contrary to the opinions of some alkaline diet experts, following an alkaline pH diet does not guarantee that you will see the weight-loss results you want. Some alkalizing foods, such as cashews, avocados, pumpkin seeds, and olives, are high in fat, and therefore also high in calories. These are healthy foods that can be part of your weight loss or weight maintenance plan, but they need to be eaten in moderation.

On the bright side, however, most foods on the alkaline pH diet are excellent for weight loss. These foods, especially fruits and vegetables, are filling but low in calories. Whole grains and legumes, which are also part of this diet, are somewhat higher in calories, but still far better for weight loss than candy bars and soda pop. Overall, the alkaline pH diet could be the ultimate diet for weight loss as well as general health.
